Top Ten Short Stories
This is a chart of Sheckley's most compiled stories (according to
the Locus index). It gives a reasonable indication of which are his most popular stories.
01) The Specialist (1953)
A bizarre group of aliens combine to form a living spaceship.
Philip K. Dick is about the only other author I can think of who ever
came up with such effortless strangeness.
02) Pilgrimage to Earth
(1956)
A very black comedy about a (near?) future
where the whole planet had been turned into a seedy holiday resort.
03) The Store of the Worlds
(1959)
A bleak tale about a machine that lets you live in
the best of all possible worlds. Perhaps Sheckley's most perfect story.
04) The Seventh Victim (1953)
Hunter and Victim try to kill each other in a state endorsed game.
Turned into a film and followed by three novels.
05) Can You Feel Anything
When I Do This? (1969)
The sex life of a vacuum cleaner! A favourite of Playboy readers.
06) The Prize of Peril (1959)
07) Warm (1953)
08) Monsters (1953)
09) Street of Dreams, Feet
of Clay (1968)
10) Shape (1953)
